Responding to Alex Karp's remarks on AI model weights, the author highlights an often-underestimated issue: while open-source models are cheaper per unit of compute than frontier closed models, most companies lack the time and engineering talent to unlock their full potential and surpass frontier models.
The current industry reality is a trade-off: choosing open-source essentially means swapping "cheaper compute costs" for "more expensive engineering talent."
