MIT Develops FloatForm Self-Assembling Micro-Boat Swarm

An MIT team published a study in Nature Communications on FloatForm, a swarm of micro-boats designed to turn water surfaces into programmable, dynamic urban spaces.
- Design Inspiration: Inspired by fire ants forming rafts, each 21cm square boat acts as an independent agent. They coordinate with neighbors via local rules to achieve parallel movement and self-assembly, avoiding the computational bottlenecks of traditional centralized planning at scale.
- Hardware Mechanism: It uses an origami-inspired auxiliary structure to drive built-in magnetic latches, consuming almost no power when connecting or disconnecting. Four micro-thrusters provide omnidirectional movement.
- Experimental Performance: A swarm of 8 boats could randomly aggregate, lock, reconfigure, and move as a whole within 4-8 minutes. In 4-boat trials, the success rate without human intervention reached 90%, and 70% for 8 boats. The system also features automatic re-grouping after getting lost and deadlock recovery. Simulations show smooth scalability up to 64 robots.
- Application Prospects: Potential uses include building temporary floating bridges, markets, or stages. Future challenges involve moving from indoor pools to real canal environments.
