Carmack Repeatedly Open-Sources Engine Code

John Carmack has proactively open-sourced the code for his most important game engines multiple times, including Doom, Quake, Quake II, Quake III, and Doom 3. He did this not necessarily to teach others, but because he believes that once commercial value has been extracted, knowledge shouldn't remain permanently locked away within a company.
