In a new paper, Google researchers highlight a problem far more severe than standard hallucinations: "confident ignorance" in frontier AI models. The study reveals systematic flaws in the models' "metacognition," rendering them incapable of accurately recognizing the boundaries of their own knowledge. Rather than admitting "I don't know" when lacking an answer, models generate misinformation with absolute certainty and an authoritative tone, exposing a severe disconnect between their internal uncertainty and external expression.
