French Humanoid Robot UMA Takes First Steps

French humanoid robotics startup UMA released footage of its Version 0 prototype taking its first steps inside a Parisian Haussmann-style building. Founded just 9 months ago, the prototype was designed, manufactured, and assembled in-house by a small team. The CEO is Rémi Cadène, who previously led AI for Tesla Optimus, and co-founder Pierre Sermanet hails from the Google DeepMind robotics team.
The post emphasizes UMA's approach of developing AI, software, and hardware collaboratively within the same team, rather than just building AI for rented robotic bodies. It also notes that Morgan Stanley has revised its forecast for China's humanoid robot shipments this year to 50,000 units, with Chinese companies expected to account for over 80% of global shipments by 2025.
