AI Makes Take-Home Exams Unreliable

A Brown University professor suspected students of heavily using ChatGPT or Claude to inflate scores on take-home exams. After switching the final to an in-person format, a comparison of grade distributions revealed that while students scored near perfectly with AI tools, their performance dropped significantly during the offline exam.
