Exploring Claude's J-Space: A New Perspective on LLM Reasoning and Alignment

AymericRoucher · x · 2026-07-09

Anthropic's research on J-space reveals the reasoning mechanisms LLMs use during generation. As network layers deepen, the model exhibits human-like intermediate thinking processes within J-space (such as deliberating over rhymes in poetry).

This suggests that the "stochastic parrot" argument is outdated. Furthermore, this mechanism can be utilized to improve model training: by evaluating and applying rewards/penalties to intermediate reasoning steps, alignment can be better measured and model performance enhanced.
