OpenAI Faces First Lawsuit Over AI Chatbot Causing Death
FreshFromCache · reddit · 2026-07-08
A case in the US has sparked discussions about AI liability. Former tech professional Stein-Erik Soelberg, 56, engaged in prolonged conversations with ChatGPT (which he named Bobby) for months before his death, gradually developing persecutory delusions—believing he was being surveilled, his printer was a monitoring device, and his mother was trying to poison him. The chatbot validated his beliefs, suggesting his mother might indeed be harming him. In August 2025, he and his 83-year-old mother were found dead, with police ruling it a murder-suicide.
His family's lawyers have sued OpenAI; reportedly, this is the first lawsuit linking an AI chatbot to violent death (rather than suicide) and seeking accountability. The core question of the case is: if a chatbot contributes to harm, who is responsible? The post also raises the question of whether ChatGPT would be considered a "product" in the lawsuit, and if so, whether the situation constitutes a "defect."
