Cloudflare Launches AI Paywall Gateway for Per-Scrape Agent Billing
xiaohu · x · 2026-07-08
Cloudflare released Monetization Gateway, allowing owners of websites, data sources, and APIs to charge AI Agents per access. This breaks the traditional internet model of trading content for attention and monetizing via ads—AI Agents don't look at ads, don't buy subscriptions, and simply leave with the data. The payment process is based on the open x402 protocol: after receiving a payment prompt and quote, the Agent automatically completes the payment and resubmits the request with proof of receipt. Cloudflare verifies this at the nearest of over 330 global nodes using the stablecoin USDC, with official claims of settlement within one second. Taking a flight-booking AI as an example, querying flight delay data costs roughly one cent, requiring no human intervention or pre-registered accounts, thus achieving automated machine-to-machine micro-payments.
