Hierarchical Pooling Achieves 5x Lossless Retrieval Compression

Researchers found that using hierarchical pooling to compress the storage and compute costs of late interactions (like ColBERT-style interactions) is highly effective with almost no loss in retrieval quality. Previous training optimizations for MUVERA/SMVE already improved performance retention; further training specifically for hierarchical pooling could achieve 5x lossless compression, drastically lowering vector retrieval deployment costs.
