ATHENA: Therapeutic Reasoning AI Agent for All FDA-Approved Drugs

marinkazitnik · x · 2026-07-07

Researchers have introduced ATHENA, an AI agent capable of therapeutic reasoning across all FDA-approved drugs since 1939. Rather than relying on static knowledge embedded in model weights, ATHENA deduces required evidence step-by-step by calling 212 biomedical tools. This addresses the complex reasoning challenges in treatment decisions that require integrating disease context, comorbidities, drug interactions, and contraindications. While most LLMs answer directly from parametric memory and often fail to use tools proactively even when provided, ATHENA is designed to first determine what evidence needs to be sought before gradually forming a conclusion, fundamentally solving the iterative challenges of therapeutic reasoning.
