Chalmers Paper Explores the Possibility of Conscious LLMs
pickover · x · 2026-07-06
Philosopher David J. Chalmers' free paper, "Could a Large Language Model be Conscious?", discusses augmented LLM systems. He suggests that within the next decade, systems featuring perception, embodiment, world and self-models, global workspaces, and unified goals could emerge. Chalmers argues it is reasonable to assign over a 50% credibility to such systems developing consciousness, making the emergence of conscious augmented LLMs in a decade not entirely implausible.
