Midjourney Demands Film Studios Disclose Internal AI Training Practices

In an ongoing copyright lawsuit, Midjourney is demanding that film studios like Disney, Universal, and Warner Bros. disclose their internal AI training practices during discovery, including training datasets, model weights, business plans, board presentations, and research reports. Midjourney argues that if studios are also using unauthorized copyrighted content to train storyboarding and ideation models, it constitutes an industry norm that could bolster its fair use defense. A judge previously limited discovery to consumer-facing AI, but Midjourney has now petitioned Judge Kronstadt to overturn that restriction.
