Meta Rolls Out Muse Voice and Realtime Avatar Calls to All US Users
Meta announced on November 6 that voice features in its AI companion app Muse are now available to all users across the US. Users can call their muse or start video calls anytime for advice, on mobile, web, and Mac. Alexandr Wang made the announcement in a post and demoed it with his own experience: that day he ran into a tricky situation, asked Muse for guidance, and got a response that felt "calm and steady."
Confirmed
- Muse voice and realtime video calls are open to all US users, supported on mobile, web, and Mac
- Launch of Muse Realtime Avatar: built on Muse Realtime Voice technology, it renders the voice agent in real time as an expressive, interactive animated avatar, stylizable as people, animals, and more
- Multiple voice options available; per rohanpaulai's technical analysis, Realtime Voice output carries speech tokens encoding both semantics and tone, realtime video call response latency is about 870ms, and the avatar can react in real time while listening
- The capability was previously previewed at the Connect conference; this is the official launch
- Early testers compared the experience to a FaceTime video call; according to a repost, Meta trains a dedicated model for each custom avatar
- Team members said building and scaling this experience has been both fun and a lot of work
Why it matters
- Realtime Avatar upgrades voice companionship from audio-only to expressive, visual interaction, a key step for Meta in competing in the AI companion space
- The 870ms realtime response and emotionally expressive speech token design reflect progress in voice agents on both latency and human-likeness
