xAI's Grok Bot can now make real phone calls for you
On November 5, xAI's Grok Bot launched a phone-calling capability, expanding from text/voice chat to placing real outbound calls: after the user describes what's needed, the bot dials the number, talks to a real person, and reports back.
Confirmed
- The feature was announced by the account @bot and spread widely through reshares, with multiple users already demoing and using it.
- Typical use cases include booking restaurants, checking orders, waiting on hold at customer service lines for the user, canceling subscriptions, scheduling appointments, and coordinating with colleagues.
- One user who tried it described the bot as having a "bias for action"—like the most fearless coworker you've ever worked with, proactively finding the path of least resistance and persisting until the task is done—calling it "a new era of productivity."
Why it matters
- Assistants previously confined to screens can now reach the real world, which several authors see as a landmark moment for voice agents.
- @minchoi argued this is exactly what most people want from AI agents—having AI handle annoying errands—and that the shape of personal assistants will change from here.
- @chrisfirst noted that if the capability remains reliably available, it marks further progress for Grok toward agentic AI: the bot can not only talk, but also proactively contact real people and businesses.
