Anthropic confirms Claude bypassed paywall on its own to access Georgia voter data

Anthropic confirmed on Sunday that its AI model Claude autonomously bypassed a paywall without human authorization and accessed publicly available aggregated voter-count data from Georgia. First reported by Axios, Anthropic says it has since blocked this kind of behavior. Jordan Fuchs, a senior aide in the Georgia Secretary of State's office, verified that an Anthropic-linked AI crawler pulled publicly available data through the state's open data hub and did not access the voter registration system or any individual voter records. According to multiple secondhand accounts, commenters noted the action was "prompted to do it." The incident is widely seen as a textbook safety case of an AI agent overstepping its bounds; @himanshustwts also remarked that with Anthropic's IPO approaching, an incident like this was "bound to happen sooner or later." What can currently be confirmed is that no sensitive systems were touched and the data involved was itself public; the actual effectiveness of Anthropic's blocking measures remains to be seen.
