Anthropic Donates Agent Skills Standard to the Agentic AI Foundation

On October 23, Anthropic announced it was donating the Agent Skills standard to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) under the Linux Foundation — another key agent standard handed to the neutral foundation, following MCP. According to the official announcement, more than 70 agent platforms have integrated the standard since December 2025.

The donation was announced publicly by Anthropic engineers including Boris Cherny; Agent Skills now sits alongside MCP under AAIF stewardship.
A skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file with required metadata and instructions, plus optional resources such as scripts, reference docs, and templates — packaging procedural knowledge and team/user-specific context into a portable, version-manageable unit.
Existing skills remain usable after the donation with unchanged licensing; anyone can adopt the standard or contribute without joining AAIF.
Governance rests with a six-company Technical Steering Committee, with members from Anthropic, Earendil (Pi), Google, Microsoft, and others.
AAIF also announced four newly hosted projects: Agent Skills, Open Responses, OpenEnv, and OpenSandbox, donated by Anthropic, OpenAI, Alibaba, and others respectively.

Why it matters

With both key agent standards (MCP and Agent Skills) now under a neutral foundation, plus multiple companies donating projects to AAIF, the industry is better positioned for interoperability and broad standards adoption — avoiding lock-in to any single vendor.
