OpenAI staff says distillation explains about half of Chinese models' catch-up

OpenAI's Dean Ball said model distillation played a bigger role in Chinese models catching up to US frontier models than he previously realized, estimating it explains about half of the catch-up speed, a view he stresses is independent of his employer.
