Google's Gemini app quietly surfaces new "4 Argon" model

On the afternoon of Tuesday, October 14, Google quietly added a new model option named "4 Argon" to the Gemini app's model selector without any announcement, sparking a flurry of screenshot discussions on Reddit.

Confirmed

• Screenshots posted by multiple users (@Necessary-Ad-6088, @blazz199, @autisticDeush, @ChrisUniverse, @KnightHiryuu, etc.) consistently show "4 Argon – Complex tasks" in the model selector, marked New, listed above 3.5 Flash-Lite, 3.8 Flash, and 3.1 Pro, sitting alongside 3.1 Pro.
• The model has its own Thinking level setting with three tiers: Low (fast and efficient), Medium (balanced), and High (Extra thorough).
• @Puzzleheaded-Club160 posted that when asked about its identity in the app, the model described itself as "Gemini 4 Argon — Google's latest flagship model, built for deep reasoning, complex multi-step workflows, and real-world software engineering."
• The sighting spans multiple regions and subscription tiers: a Brazilian user (@KnightHiryuu) also saw the option; @ChrisUniverse showed it available under a Gemini Ultra subscription.

Not yet confirmed

• Access is inconsistent: @leoriverplate32 reported that free users clicking it get a prompt to upgrade to the Pro plan; @Puzzleheaded-Club160 said Argon is visible in the app but not yet available on Pro; while @BrotherFantastic9404, @ChrisUniverse and other Pro/Ultra subscribers said they could already use it. This looks like a staged rollout or A/B test by Google; the official launch scope and pricing tier remain unconfirmed.
• The model's actual capabilities, benchmark results, and the meaning of the "4" version number all come from the model's self-description or UI information; Google has made no official announcement.

Why it matters

• If the self-description holds, 4 Argon would be Google's next-generation flagship for complex reasoning and software engineering tasks, directly competing with rival frontier reasoning models.
• From the silent appearance of the option to the messy subscription access, the pattern fits Google's recent practice of small-scale testing of new models; its rollout pace and official launch timing are worth watching.
