Allen AI's TutorMoments Benchmark Finds LLM Tutors Overdo It for Students
Allen AI (Ai2) has released TutorMoments-Preview, a benchmark that tests whether LLM tutors guide students to solve problems themselves or simply do too much for them. The data shows frontier models broadly struggle with over-helping on the question of "when to assist and when to push," and that detailed pedagogical instructions in prompts significantly improve performance.
Confirmed
- Data comes from real math tutoring sessions, with experienced teachers annotating 520 key moments, half requiring "scaffolding" (lowering difficulty) and half requiring a "push" (asking students to do more themselves)
- Models are measured by their over-helping rate (lower is better): Claude Sonnet 5.5 at 33%, GPT-6 Astra 35%, GPT-6 Sol (non-reasoning) 43%, Claude Opus 5.5 at some rate (the post was truncated before giving the full figure), and GPT-5.5 as high as 83%
- By scenario: Claude Sonnet 5.5 (low effort) performed best when teachers suggested letting the student solve it themselves; with explicit pedagogical instructions, the GPT-6 family showed the least over-helping
- Models evaluated include GPT-6 Astra, Claude Opus 5.5, and other frontier models
- Human teachers scored only 0.458 on the same benchmark, showing the task is hard for humans too
- Detailed pedagogical prompts significantly improve model performance
Why it matters
- AI tutoring products are spreading fast, and the balance between "doing the problem for the student" and "guiding the student to think" directly determines educational value — over-helping undermines learning
- TutorMoments offers the first quantitative evaluation dimension based on key moments from real classrooms, giving model developers and product teams a reference benchmark
- The human score of just 0.458 also suggests that "when to help, when to push" is inherently hard in education, and can't simply be blamed on model capability
