ChatGPT Officially Arrives in Microsoft Word for All Plans

Around September 17, OpenAI officially announced ChatGPT's integration into Microsoft Word, letting users draft, rewrite, proofread, and fix formatting without leaving the document. It marks a key step of ChatGPT moving from a standalone chat tool into daily office software.

Confirmed

• ChatGPT for Word is open to all ChatGPT plans including Free (with usage limits); it must be installed from the Microsoft Marketplace, with the entry point at chatgpt.com/apps/word/.
• Features include turning draft notes into first drafts, untangling complex paragraphs, proofreading with suggested edits, fixing formatting issues, unifying terminology, plus a sidebar supporting selection rewrite, condensing for executives, comments, and track changes.
• Business and Enterprise plans get a two-week free preview of GPT-5.6 Sol in Word.
• The same rollout also covers other Office components such as PowerPoint, per @OpenAI's official post.
• Per @testingcatalog, the capability had been teased earlier; this launch opens it to all plans globally.

Why it matters

• Writing and editing no longer requires switching between apps, embedding ChatGPT directly into Word, the most widely used writing tool.
• Reddit user @mahamara compared it to the return of Microsoft's Clippy, though with far greater capability.
• The enterprise GPT-5.6 Sol preview suggests OpenAI is pushing stronger in-document model capabilities to paid and enterprise users.
