ChatGPT's photo editing goes viral, prompts touted as beating Photoshop
In late August and early September, ChatGPT's new photo editing capability sparked a wave of hands-on tests and sharing. Users claimed that uploading a photo with prompts yields professional-grade retouching in seconds; @TawohAwa even said the results beat Photoshop and could replace expensive commercial photography.
Confirmed
- ChatGPT's image feature added photo editing: upload a photo plus prompts to retouch it (@TawohAwa, Aug 31)
- @TawohAwa's listed use cases: background swaps, e-commerce white-background shots, YouTube covers, fashion-editorial looks, movie posters
- @aitrendzxyz posted several threads on Sep 1 with 9 practical prompts: magazine-cover quality, "teleporting" people into any background, restoring old photos, and turning selfies into cinematic or professional-grade shots
- @eyishazyer's reposted hands-on article offered 10 copy-ready prompt templates across photography styles
- The core method, stressed across posts: guide the AI with specific descriptions of lighting, composition, and style (@aitrendzxyz)
Why it matters
- If the results hold up, ordinary users can do high-quality retouching without Photoshop, lowering barriers in commercial photography and design
- White-background product shots, video covers, and old-photo restoration are high-frequency needs that could disrupt related outsourcing and design services
- Multiple accounts posted and reposted similar content within days, showing strong community interest; prompt lists differ (9 vs 10), so users should verify results themselves
