Claude's August Outages and Quality Degradation Spark Refund Calls
From August 24–26, Claude suffered a major outage and visible quality degradation, drawing concentrated complaints from developers and paying users, some of whom are considering cancelling or reverting to manual work. Anthropic has not publicly responded.
Confirmed
- On August 24 Claude suffered a large-scale outage, its 13th faulty day that month; users hit 529 errors and automated workflows were interrupted (per @新智元).
- @sheketsilencio reported Claude Code and Codex nearly unusable, producing inexplicable compressed pseudo-English like "757/757 - green. The seam's the point..." or degenerating into meaningless babble, and refusing instructions.
- @diddlysquidler said multiple users found Opus 5 and Max Thinking performing terribly over the past three days—going off-topic and ignoring instructions—even for paying Max users with low context.
- @madhavsinghal reported severe hallucinations from web Opus 5 on basic questions, with frequent self-correcting follow-ups.
Unconfirmed
- A view relayed by @jkubicki speculates that Claude degraded over the past 45 days because Anthropic rerouted inference compute to recursive training of next-gen models—unverified.
- User Devin Jameson (via @marcosalvi) called Opus 5 "broken and unusable" and not worth subscribing to—an individual judgment.
- The "compute exhaustion making the model dumber" claim reported by @新智元 also remains user speculation.
Why it matters
- Outages plus quality degradation directly disrupt developers' and Max subscribers' core workflows; some are considering cancellation (noting Fable 5 is acceptable but quota-limited) or returning to manual work.
- If the recursive-training compute-rerouting theory holds, subscription service quality may keep yielding to next-gen model R&D, posing long-term risks to Claude's reputation and retention. Anthropic has not responded publicly.
