Microsoft scientist recalls Clippy's Bayesian prototype and engineering compromises

Microsoft's Eric Horvitz revealed that Clippy originated from a Bayesian inference prototype called Lumiere. Due to scalability challenges, the shipped assistant combined a lightweight legacy system with the Bayesian model that only ran during user-initiated searches.
