TAAC x KDD Cup 2026 Wraps Up: Industrial Track Champions Won Using Only DeepSeek's Web Chat

TAAC (Tencent Advertising Algorithm Competition) ran as the official main track of KDD Cup 2026, with results announced at KDD 2026 in Jeju Island. The industrial track champions completed the entire competition using only DeepSeek's web chat interface, becoming the most talked-about story of the event.

Confirmed

The competition was hosted by TAAC as the official KDD Cup main track, with a prize pool of about $885,000 (roughly RMB 6 million); the academic track champion took $300,000, which per 新智元 sets a record for a Chinese corporate tech competition.
Nearly 14,000 contestants from 52 countries and regions formed over 5,700 teams.
The task focused on unified sequence modeling and feature interaction in recommender systems, requiring a unified recommendation module.
The industrial track champion team "日之光面" (including a Kaggle #1-ranked member) completed the whole pipeline via DeepSeek's web chat only, with no API calls and no GPT/Claude models.
The industrial winning solution, QueryFormer, uses Query Tokens as a hub to improve recommendation; per 量子位, AUC improved (exact figures truncated in sources).
The academic track champions proposed CRAFT, which iteratively updates user interests via intent tokens.

Why it matters

Winning a complex recommender-system challenge without APIs or foreign closed-source models made this a landmark case of LLM-assisted research workflows, widely covered by 机器之心, 新智元 and 量子位.
Both winning solutions (QueryFormer and CRAFT) offer references for exploring scaling laws in recommender systems.
