SK Hynix Executives Warn AI Memory Demand Far Exceeds Capacity

Recently, SK Hynix executives revealed in interviews and analyst meetings that memory demand within the AI compute chain is exceptionally strong and growing exponentially, drawing significant industry attention to semiconductor supply and demand dynamics.

Demand Far Exceeds Capacity Plans

According to Bloomberg TV and CNBC, SK Hynix chairman Chey Tae-won stated that the company's original plan to double capacity over the next five years is "far from enough." Chey revealed that clients are actually requesting 5 to 6 times the originally promised capacity. He suggested that predictions of capital expenditures exceeding $10 trillion by 2030 might still be conservative.

Inference Demand and Capacity Relief in Doubt

Regarding the future supply-demand landscape, @BenBajartin analyzed that as enterprise and consumer AI applications scale into massive inference, the demand for memory and storage will not drop significantly. He emphasized that even if new cleanroom capacities come online in the coming years and the viability of Chinese storage products improves, it is unlikely to immediately alleviate the current severe pressure on memory demand.
