Paper Questions Token-Based AI Pricing

An ICML oral presentation questioned today’s token-based AI pricing. It argues input-token billing is easier to justify, but charging for output tokens becomes questionable when hidden reasoning or “thinking” inflates token counts, including in pricing models used by companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
